POOL SAFETY TIPS
FOR YOUR FAMILY THIS SUMMER
The pool is a fun place to make memories with friends and family; however, it is also a place where over 3,500 children die from unintentional drownings a year. This is not to scare anyone away from installing or utilizing a pool in their home, it is a way to point out how important it is to establish safety procedures and rules for younger children around a pool.
Here are some ways that have been proven to be effective in keeping children safe and families feeling secure:
Here are some ways that have been proven to be effective in keeping children safe and families feeling secure:
Barriers are important:
Limit the amount of unsupervised swimming children do with a permanent or removable fence. In the united states, there is not a federal law that requires resident pools to install fences or barriers; however, some states have taken it upon themselves to, by law, require homes to limit access to their pool with mandatory covers and fences.

Pool alarms can help:
This may sound like overkill but ensuring your children’s safety is more important than having too much safety. You can set an alarm system that alerts you to your smartphone immediately. Set alarms the detect unusual motions and whenever a pool door is opened. Make sure the alarm makes an auditory sound as well to scare the child that is opening the gate.
- Set alerts to your smartphone
- Have wave sensors to detect bodies in the water
- Set motion sensors
- Install a camera
Pool Net:
Pool covers and nets have proven to be effective forms of safety for pools with children. These mesh pool covers are extremely durable and can withstand two adult body weights, making it a safe option for small children. Different pool covers can suit your budget but not compromise your child’s safety.
- Vinyl pool covers
- Automatic pool covers
- Mech pool covers
Chemicals should be hidden
It is no secret that to keep a pool clean there have to be chemicals used. Children are curious beings and will want to mimic any action they see you take, including cleaning the pool with chemicals. This can quickly become a hazard to the health and safety of your children. Do not store pool chemicals in areas that can be reached by children to avoid skin contact and consumption.
Pool Rules:
Pool rules should never be a compromise because setting figurative boundaries will help your children think twice about testing the literal boundaries. Set rules that like no swimming without an adult, no getting near the water without permission, no running near the pool, no swimming past where an adult has allowed, and so on. Rules will help you and your family keep your little ones safe.
Pools should be your family’s spot to make memories and enjoy one another’s company. Set rules, guidelines, and more to ensure accidents do not happen. Residential pool drownings are preventable, please take the time to cover all of your bases and keep every happy, healthy, and safe.
